When I left Malawi a year ago, one of the goals I set out to was to dedicate my self more to my art. To take that part of me seriously, rather than just seeing it as a hobby.

Describing myself as an artist is a fairly recent thing for me, even though art in various forms has been an important part of my life.

A couple of weeks ago, I needed gift cards for the chocolate business; we did a few gift hampers and I had run out. Enter the idea that I might as well put my art on postcards, rather than to start hunting. So to designing I go. Unfortunately, the printers made a mistake and instead of postcards, they printed one A4 of each artwork.

This was days before our market, so I decided to take the prints and get a feel for their reception with the public.

Off the charts! I didn’t sell the pieces that day, but people’s reaction and their valuation was very interesting and made me post these prints a bit more.

Yesterday, I made my first sale. I had ended up printing the artcards and sold one of those, money in the bank. The two prints are also reserved, just waiting to get them to their new owner, as sending through DHL from here (in Malawi) is SO much harder than it should be.

On top of that, I got two commissioned pieces, a word art piece for a musician’s cover art and a collage for our Dzulo Lathu exhibition.

Could I slowly be off to a career as a selling artist? Stay tuned!
