For decades, leadership theory often glorified traits like coldness, detachment, and even psychopathy. Articles praised executives who could make “tough calls” without flinching, who were unaffected by the human impact of their decisions.

But today, that model is outdated.

Yes, leadership still comes with hard choices. But in an era where AI can handle repetitive and “drone” work, what we need from leaders is not their emotional detachment, but their humanity.

Meanwhile, workers are also shifting. Rising burnout, unstable housing markets, and the lessons of a pandemic have transformed how people approach their careers. Digital nomadism, part-time schedules, flexible contracts, and portfolio careers are no longer fringe choices—they are mainstream. The rigid office structures of the 90s and 2000s no longer attract or retain top talent.

What motivates people now? Again and again, research shows it isn’t only salaries or perks. It’s being seen. It’s the chance for personal growth. It’s the experience of being nurtured in a workplace that values their humanity.

That makes modern leadership a deeply human skill. It requires emotional intelligence, openness, and flexibility. It requires leaders who can hold space for uncertainty and who understand that thriving humans create thriving organizations.

The “my way or the highway” model is no longer viable. Because today, more and more people will choose the highway—perhaps in a renovated VW van, laptop in hand—and leave outdated leaders behind, overworked and isolated.

The organizations that will win in the future are those that recognize the real precious capital: human capital.
